Insider updates if 49ers, Brandon Aiyuk are close to signing new contract

Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk seemingly will stay with the San Francisco 49ers through the summer but isn't close to signing a contract extension with the club ahead of Memorial Day.

"This one's tricky because he was implicated in some trade talks around the draft," ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler said about Aiyuk during a "SportsCenter" appearance on Sunday, per Marc Adams of 49ers Webzone. "He wants a new contract; has one year left. I'm told the 49ers certainly are open to doing a deal, but talks have not progressed enough where things are close."

As Fowler noted, both Aiyuk and fellow San Francisco wide receiver Deebo Samuel were subjects of trade rumors before and after the 49ers made wideout Ricky Pearsall the 31st pick of this year's draft on April 25.

However, 49ers general manager John Lynch has since suggested San Francisco will hold onto Aiyuk and Samuel through September as the franchise attempts to return to the Super Bowl following its overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs this past February.

Aiyuk finished the 2023 regular season as quarterback Brock Purdy's weapon of choice in Purdy's first campaign as a full-time starter. According to ESPN stats, Aiyuk recorded team highs of 75 receptions, 105 targets and 1,342 receiving yards to go along with seven touchdown catches.

During the "SportsCenter" segment, Fowler said that "the market is pretty set for" Aiyuk after Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown inked a four-year, $120M extension that included $77M in guaranteed money earlier this offseason.

"So, that's something for Aiyuk and the 49ers to work off of but I'm told they're not quite there yet," Fowler added.

Adams mentioned that the 49ers have a history of not signing key contributors to extensions before training camp sessions get underway. San Francisco star pass-rusher Nick Bosa didn't receive his desired deal last year until early September.

As of Monday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the 49ers second among the betting favorites at +600 odds to win Super Bowl LIX in February 2025.

Lynch understandably wants to keep the band together for as long as possible as the 49ers attempt to do more than play in a fourth-straight conference title game, but there's no sign Aiyuk will offer his current employer any kind of discount before Week 1 this September.
