Tennessee QB Joe Milton addresses idea of changing positions after getting selected by the Patriots in 2024 NFL Draft
Vasha Hunt-USA TODAY Sports

The New England Patriots selected Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Earlier this month, The Athletic's Dane Brugler noted that several NFL teams believe that Milton will eventually transition to tight end as a pro.

"Overall, Milton has the physical tools that scream first-round pick, but his passing instincts and ability to read the field are undeveloped," noted Brugler in his annual The Beast NFL draft guide. "He is a project quarterback prospect, and some teams believe he will eventually transition to tight end in the NFL (similar path as Logan Thomas)."

After getting selected by the Patriots on Saturday, Milton was asked by reporters about a potential position switch in the NFL.

And the former Vol made it clear that his future is at quarterback.

Milton told reporters that New England didn't have any conversations with him about playing a position other than quarterback.

When a reporter asked Milton if he had any conversations with other NFL teams about moving to tight end, or if he would have any interest in switching positions, the former Vol pointed out that it was the first time that he's heard the noise about moving to tight end.

"You are the first person I have actually heard that from, to be real with you," said Milton. "But that will never happen."

A position switch obviously isn't on the radar right now for Milton -- he hasn't even taken a snap in a minicamp yet. And the fact that he isn't even entertaining the idea of moving positions is a good sign for his future as a quarterback. It means he's confident in his ability to be a quarterback at the next level.

And why shouldn't he be? Milton just went through an entire season as a starter in the SEC. He helped lead the Vols to a nine win season in 2023 -- one of the few nine-win seasons in recent program history. The last thing that should be on Milton's mind is playing a position other than quarterback in the NFL.
